Fortescue wrest control of processing from Crushing Services over safety concerns

Fortescue Metals Group has used its step-in rights to take management of its ore processing at Christmas Creek away from contractor Crushing Services International.

According to the miner it "has taken this action as part of working with CSI and its parent company Mineral Resources to ensure the safe and hazard free operation of the Ore Processing Facilities".

Fortescue added that is being undertaken in co-operation with the two companies.

It comes just a month after a worker was crushed to death while carrying out maintenance work at the crushing plant.

Electrical Trades Union WA secretary Les McLaughlan said the union had previously flagged concerns about the kind of work Williams was undertaking, and in more general terms, concerns around CSI’s safety practices

Due to this changeover of management and supervision the miner will carry out a brief ramp down at both its ore processing facilities, and expects a short term disruption at Christmas Creek, whoever it predicts that this will not affect its FY2014 production targets.

Despite the management transition all Crushing Services employees will be retained under Fortescue.
