Viento Group subsidiary Viento Contracting Services (VCS) has won a $15.4 million Fortescue Metals Group contract to build a tailings storage facility for the Solomon iron ore project.

A joint venture with Eastern Guruma and Wirlu-murra Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corporation, the project is due to begin this month and is expected to finish by late September.

VCS managing director Patrick Pearcey said this is the first major contract awarded since the establishment of VCS.

“This is a great boost for Viento and VCS as we look to grow our civil contracting business in the mining industry. We are excited by the opportunity to provide our services to Fortescue Metals Group on the Solomon Tailings Storage Facility.

“We look forward to a long rewarding partnership,” he said in a company statement.

He added the company spent 12 months gathering personnel and resources, and anticipates a high level of tenders in the pipeline and looks forward to 2014.
