Former Vale CEO killed in plane crash

Roger Agnelli, the former CEO of Vale who was removed by the government, has been killed in a light plane crash.

Fifty six year old Agnelli was among seven victims of the incident on Saturday.

The pilot and six passengers were killed, and one person on the ground injured, when Agnelli’s seven seater CA-9 aircraft crashed into two houses soon after takeoff.

The news rocked his former company, which Agnelli led from 2001 to 2011.

“Vale and its employees offer their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the executive, who contributed so much to the development of our company,” Vale said in an official company statement.

Agnelli was booted from the miner in 2011, after the Government used its position as the major shareholder in the miner to demand Vale remove Agnelli amidst accusations that he was not doing enough to boost the South American nation’s economy.
