First ore mined at Nova nickel

Independence Group has taken a major step forward with first development ore mined at the Nova project.

“The mining of first ore is an important milestone for IGO as it progresses construction and development of the world class nickel copper cobalt project,” Independence Group said.

According to the miner, the 2030 ore drive and 2080 ore drive have cross-cut and development of the Nova orebody has commenced, including mining of both disseminated and breccia ore since early June this year, with good reconciliation to the resource model.

To date more than 5000 meters of development have been completed, with underground contractor Barminco running two jumbos at the project.

Swick is also on site as the underground diamond drilling contractor, and has three rigs operating as part of a grade control program.

Work on Nova’s processing and non-process infrastructure is underway by GR Engineering, who is reportedly ahead of schedule and nearly 80 per cent complete at the end of last month.

All major infrastructure, bar the power station, is complete and operational.

“As at the end of May 2016, the project was 90 per cent complete,” Independence said.

“The project remains on schedule, and budget, for commissioning in late 2016 with production of first concentrates in December 2016.”
