Fire on BHP land burning “out of control”

Emergency services in the Pilbara are battling an “out of control” fire burning on land leased by BHP Billiton near Newman.

According to The West Australian BHP is helping monitor the blaze, and a warning has been issued for those traveling the Great Northern Highway 10km north of Newman.

The Deparment of Fire and Emergency Services said while there was no threat to people or homes, the fire was moving fast and was “out of control and unpredictable”.

Lightning is suspected to have started the fire at 4.30pm yesterday.
