A fifth explosion has occurred inside the Pike River Coal mine where 29 men were trapped on November 19.

Fire is billowing from the ventilation shaft, further delaying the recovery attempts to extract the bodies of the workers.

Grey District Mayor Tony Kokshoorn says the families of the miners have been shown footage of the mine burning, and that they are thoroughly worn out and quiet.

The Gorniczy Agregat Gasniczy, or ‘GAG’ engine, sent by Queensland Mine Rescue Services has not yet been used at the mine, but could possibly be used tonight, Kokshoorn said.
