FIFO police assault not tolerated in Gladstone

A FIFO worker has been found guilty of assaulting a police officer in Gladstone.

Shannon Kearns pleaded guilty to one count of assaulting or obstructing a police officer and one count of failing to leave a licensed premises.

The offences took place on March 1, after Kearns was removed from the Reef Hotel after harassing female patrons.

He struck a police officer on the shoulder with an open palm, after police attempted to push Kearns away from hotel security staff.

Magistrate Russell Warfield made it clear that violence towards police officers would not be tolerated.

"If you don't like Gladstone you're free to leave; I don't care," Warfield said.

Kearns avoided conviction but was fined $800 and banned from three licensed venues for six months.
