Skills DMC has launched the Cairns based fly in fly out co-ordinator for a pilot project to work with mining and the local community.
"The FIFO coordinators will develop links between mining, construction and infrastructure projects in remote locations and skilled workers in order to capitalise on the fly-in, fly-out job opportunities in our growing resources and infrastructure industries,” according to senator Chris Evans.
Head of the Cairns based FIFO Pilot Project Steering Committee, Greg Lane, said the region is the first in the country to benefit from the Government’s FIFO initiative.
"The FIFO Coordinator will also work closely with local stakeholders in Cairns including with Advance Cairns to market the existing skills and capacity of the region." Lane said.
Evans said the Government will also appoint new FIFO co-ordinators in four other priority regions, in addition to the Cairns program.
The program was developed from the recommendations of the National Resources Sector Workforce Strategy.
Evans said the implementation of the program will be divided between industry, and State and Federal Governments.
"The FIFO coordinators program is part of the Government’s effort to keep pace with the demand for skilled workers, and help communities undergoing structural change," he said.
"This role will be pivotal to placing skilled workers in booming industries for fly-in, fly-out work opportunities."
