Female engineer wins Smart Woman award

Melanie Gordon, a Project Manager for Dragline Shutdown with BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA), has won the Queensland Government’s Smart Women Smart State Award.

Gordon was the first female to be appointed by BMA to manage a dragline maintenance shutdown.

Earlier this year, Gordon won the Queensland Resources Council Resources Award for Women (RAW) and since then, has actively promoted engineering as a career for women.

Born and raised in Brisbane, her friends placed bets on how long she would last in the mining world.

Six years on, it is doubtful anyone won the bet.

‘I love the challenge, variety, job satisfaction and recognition,’ Gordon said.

‘I’m constantly challenged by new work and I’m constantly learning and discovering that I can do things that I didn’t know I could do.’
