Fatal incident at Rio Tinto’s Channar mine

A man has died at Rio Tinto’s Channar mine in the Pilbara, Western Australia when the truck he was driving veered off a haul road.

The incident happened on Wednesday evening.

The truck driver was part of Rio’s Greater Paraburdoo iron ore site, which suspended operations following the incident.

Western Australia’s Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety is investigating the cause of the incident.

Rio’s Greater Paraburdoo mines – including Paraburdoo, Channar and Eastern Ranges operations – have a production capacity of around 33 million tonnes a year.

The mine employs both residential and fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) workers.
