The families of the Pike River coal victims have been shown footage from inside the mine.

Grey District Mayor Tony Kookshoorn said the lengthy footage showed the scale of the blast.

He said cement paper-type coating on dust bags was unharmed, but other areas of the mine shown in the footage had suffered more damaged.

“There was a wooden crate sitting there and it’s not even charred at all.

There was other big drums which haven’t been moved and there are other incidents where ladders have been flipped over and some parts of the ceiling have collapsed onto the floor,” he said.

The families of the 29 men are still fighting for recovery efforts to continue, after police announced last week they would be ending their efforts due to continued instability inside the mine.

Despite the lack of damage to the mine shown in the footage, police warned that it was taken far away from where any of the miners were believed to have been at the time of the initial explosion.
