Failed leadership spill leaves resources portfolio wide open

Following last week’s leadership spill that wasn’t, a number of resignations from vocal Kevin Rudd supporters and the sacking of statesman Simon Crean, the Gillard Government has begun reshuffling key Cabinet positions.

Resource Minister Martin Ferguson was amongst those who resigned, leaving the portfolio wide open.

Fergusson was widely respected in the resources sector.

Tipped to fill the void is Special Minister of State and key WA MP Gary Gray, the West Australian reported.

Gray, a former Woodside executive is also highly regarded in the energy sector because of his business background.

The new Cabinet is expected to be announced today.

Julia Gillard has announced her reshuffled frontbench.

The Prime Minister said she was "appalled" by the events of last week and was confident her colleagues now supported her.

Gary Gray has been appointed Minister for Resources and Energy, Tourism and Small Business.
