There has been an explosion at an underground coal mine in New Zealand.

The blast, at Pike River Coal mine near the town of Greymouth, has left 30 miners unaccounted for.

 

Police and emergency services have already arrived at the scene, which is already being described as a significant incident.

 

In an earlier statement, police have said there are people "known to be in the mine", according to New Zealand’s The Press.

 

Pike River Coal’s Wellington office said it is still trying to work out what caused the explosion.

 

"We are still trying to determine what has actually happened down there," a company official said.

 

Communications into the mine were cut shortly after the accident.
