Four new mineral exploration licence applications are opening for public comment following the recent North Central Victorian Goldfield Ground Release tender announcement.
The public has an opportunity to comment on the applications of Southern Star Exploration and Fosterville gold mine ahead of them being assessed by Earth Resources Regulation.
The comment period for Southern Star’s licence application will close on Wednesday December 1, 2021, while the comment period for Fosterville’s application will close on Wednesday December 8, 2021.
Comments can be made through the Have Your Say page on the Earth Resources website.
Fosterville and Southern Star were granted the exclusive right to apply for a minerals exploration licence following extensive evaluations of their tender submissions, including responsible exploration and input from Traditional Owners.
“Exploration activities such as mapping, sampling and rock testing are the first steps in establishing if minerals are present If development is considered viable, it takes many years to progress toward mining including gaining regulatory approvals,” Earth Resources policy and programs executive director Jane Burton said.
“Minerals exploration stimulates economic activity and creates jobs.
“Should exploration licences be granted, the two companies will invest $100 million in their search for gold.”
The Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions will hold online information sessions to update local communities on planned minerals exploration and outline how they can contribute to the licence application assessment process.
“We encourage locals to attend one of these sessions to learn more about minerals exploration, landholder rights and the obligations of exploration companies,” Burton said.
The three sessions will run Thursday November 18 from 7:00pm – 8:30pm, Wednesday November 24 from 7:00pm – 8:30pm and Thursday November 25 from 3:30pm – 5:00pm.
