Earthquake hits Tasmanian mine

An earthquake struck near the Savage River open cut mine at
10:37am yesterday.

Mine operator Grande Resources said no damage or injury was
caused by the magnitude 3.7 tremor.

Mine controller Eric Neilson said he thought the shockwave
was caused by the accidental discharge of a shot in the pit.

Mining was halted for several hours while staff conducted
ro9le call and safety checks.

Grange Resources is currently in the process of beginning
works on a new
tailings facility
at Savage River, which was approved in April last year.

The existing tailings facility is expected to reach capacity
in 2016, and the new facility will take the mine through to 2030.

In 2012 the Savage River mine suffered rock
slides
running for more than two days.
