Downer wins Xstrata coal contract

Downer EDI has secured a contract for the development of a coal handling and preparation plant (CHPP) at Xstrata’s Ravensworth North Coal project.

Located in the Hunter Valley, the contract is worth more than $400 million and includes the design, construction and commissioning of the CHPP, a low voltage power supply and reticulation, and a high voltage transmission supply.

Head of Downer, Grant Fenn, said the contractor has been working with Xstrata for more than two year, assisting with its development from the concept stage.

“Downer has a strong relationship with Xstrata and this two year alliance contract follows the delivery of Xstrata;s Mangoola CHPP in May this year,” Fenn said.

“The Ravensworth North Coal project is another example of this alliance. We have been proving services to Xstrata at its Mount Owen, Liddel and Mangoola mines in the Hunter for the past four years and we look forward to further growing the relationship.”

The project is predicted to create more than 400 jobs in the region.
