Downer wins Fortescue train contracts

Downer EDI has won rolling supply and support contracts to supply Fortescue with 19 new locomotives.

The contract will see Downer, in partnership with Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD), provide 19 new SD70Ace/LCi locomotives for the miner's Pilbara operations.

The first new trains are expected on site by August.

Worth more than $73 million, this agreement has Downer providing not only the trains but also service and support activities for a minimum of five years, with an option for Fortescue to extend this peiod.

According to Downer CEO Grant Fenn "this fleet of SD70Ace locomotives will bring significant performance benefits to Fortescue including additional haulage capability, fuel consumption improvements, exhaust emissions benefits and reliability improvements".

The locomotives are its components and systems are designed by EMD.

These type of trains have operated in the Pilbara for around five years.

In March this year, the company won a similar contract with BHP Billiton to supply the same locomotives as rolling stock for BHP's iron ore operations.
