Yancoal’s Donaldson coal mine has moved to care and maintenance, with the majority of the workforce deployed to nearby mines.
It officially moved into the new phase yesterday, after first announcing its intention to shut the complex’s Abel underground mine in early March.
“The move to care and maintenance is in response to ongoing global market challenges as the operation considers the future development of new underground working areas,” Yancoal said in a company statement.
The operation is currently focused on rehabilitating the site, and considering options for further underground mining potential at its Abel operation.
The majority of the 103 workers have been redeployed to the nearby Austar and Ashton underground coal mines.
