ROCKWELL Automation has released a white paper which describes a drive design which can eliminate the use of isolation transformers in drill rig operations and platforms.

The white paper claims a direct-to-drive configuration eliminates isolation transformers which can take up between 30 to 50% of a drive system’s size, and up to 70% of its weight.

Reducing size and weight is often a critical factor in reducing costs in drill rig operations and platforms.

The company claims by dispensing with transformers, design, installation and maintenance times can be shortened. It also claimed a direct-to-drive configuration will reduce energy consumption.
