Copper thievery under investigation

A mineworker will face court later in March on charges relating to the theft of 300 kilograms of copper wire from a Hunter region coal mine.

Police seized three 100 kilogram spools of the wire on Monday during a car search at Warners Bay, ABC reported.

The quantity was the same that that reported stolen from Yancoal’s Donaldson coal mine at Black Hill near Newcastle.

The 38 year-old driver of the car and employee at the Donaldson mine was charged with goods in custody.

Scrap prices for clean copper currently range between $5.50 and $7.00 per kilogram.
