Contractor killed by falling drill rods

A man has been killed in Rutherford, NSW after being crushed by falling drill rods.

Warren Black, a crane driver contractor through Boom Logistics, was working at J&S Engineering in Rutherford, loading drill rods by forklift on to his truck when one of the rods fell, knocking him to the ground and killing him instantly, the Newcastle Herald reports.

The incident occurred late on Friday afternoon.

Black, 37, leaves behind a pregnant wife and two young children.

Boom Logistics CEO Brendan Mitchell said the incident was a shock, and the company and its employees are "deeply saddened" by the incident.

"Warren was well-liked by everyone at Boom and this comes as a great shock to everyone," Mitchell said.
"Boom’s priority is to support Warren’s family and colleagues."

WorkCover and local police have begun investigations into the incident.
