Leighton Contractors is a finalist in the 5th Annual Australian Mining Prospect Awards.
Leighton Contractors has achieved improved safety, productivity and efficiency through a variety of safety and training courses.
The contractor introduced a Safety Coordinator Trainee Program in response to the shortage of qualified safety professionals in the mining industry. The innovative two year program targets frontline workers with the opportunity to gain the knowledge, skills and judgement required to become qualified safety coordinators and the company’s future safety managers and decision-makers.
In order to promote safety practice, Leighton Contractor’s introduced a Focused Recall Program.
Set in the context of a series of interview questions, employees are prompted to recall certain situations that have, or may have, led to personal damage.
The experiences are then quantified (photographed, weighed, and measured) and suggestions for improvement are made through a written report.
By rectifying potential safety risks before they become issues, employees are removing the potential for personal damage.
With over 4000 employees, safety issues are quite prominent so anything that can be done to avoid hazards is done.
From the Safety Coordinator Training Program to the Focused Recall Program, Leighton Contractors has successfully implemented the tools necessary to produce employees with the knowledge to effectively implement safe practices and to allow staff to learn from others’ experiences.
