Work has started on a new bauxite mine in Tasmania that is expected to create 180 jobs.
Australian Bauxite Limited’s Bald Hill project in the state’s north is the first new bauxite mine in Tasmania in over 30 years.
The project is expected to create around 45 direct jobs, and 135 indirect roles, after being given the greenlight in Septemner.
More than 1.6 million tonnes of bauxite is expected to be mined for domestic and international markets from three pits on the site.
“The opening of the Bald Hill mine will not only generate welcome economic activity but showcases the mineral diversity and potential of Tasmania,” Minister for Resources Paul Harriss said.
Australian Bauxite Limited is also looking at other prospective sites in Tasmania.
