The fugitive CEO of Colombian gold company CI Goldex was captured this week and will be charged for his involvement in money-laundering schemes.
The manhunt for John Hernandez ended when he was found with his wife on a public bus in Quindio on Tuesday night, Bloomberg reported.
The Colombian Attorney-General’s office alleged that the company was at the centre of a $970 million money-laundering operation which assisted cocaine traffickers, guerrillas and other criminal enterprises.
The prosecutors allege Goldex was taking illegally mined gold and mixing it in with their legal operation to help finance illegal businesses.
Last week another suspect in the case died after he threw himself off the 18th floor of a Medillin courthouse during preliminary questioning.
Colombian authorities said that two years ago profits from illegal gold mining were five times more than profit made from cocaine for Columbian rebels.
