Coal strike sees breakthrough

Miners striking at Queensland’s Collinsville coal mine will continue industrial action despite a breakthrough in negotiations.

Miners striking at Queensland’s Collinsville coal mine will continue industrial action despite a breakthrough in negotiations.

Members of the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) have blockaded the mine for a fortnight, preventing train access, in a clash over pay awards.

CFMEU spokesman Steve Pierce has vowed that the strike will continue through Friday, despite mine operator Thiess promising to meet at the end of the week to negotiate.

This continuing industrial action has seen a number of arrests as protesters physically blocked the rail lines.

“These matters could have been resolved without the employees having to engage in protected action, if Thiess had been realistic with claims the employees had before them,” Pierce said.
