Coal still our future, Gillard says

Prime minister Julia Gillard has said Australia will be dependant on coal and fossil fuels for some time, despite the Government's renewable energy plans.

Speaking in Ipswich last night, Gillard said "we are going to be reliant on fossil fuels for a long, long period of time," according to the AFR.

She admitted that despite the target of 20% renewable energy by 2020, it will still take some time to move away from coal.

Gillard went on to say that the target may even be reviewed as the push for renewable technology and power generation is likely to increase power prices more than the carbon tax.
