Stratford Coal Mine, operated by Gloucester Coal, is a finalist in the 5th Annual Australian Mining Prospect Awards.
The minesite effectively collaborated with equipment supplier FLSmidth to create and install a custom fit Smartcell into Stratford’s flotation tailings line and, by doing so, Stratford gained a 60,000 tonne per annum increase in saleable coal.
Primary fine coal processing at Stratford is through two Jameson Cells. Variations in the overall quality of feed into those cells were resulting in significant differences in fine coal yield.
The availability of the 6 cubic meter test rig from FLSmidth allowed full scale testing of a mechanical cell.
The test work was undertaken with technical support from FLSmidth.
The pilot trial results, which proved very successful, provided the detail of the float cell capacity that would be required.
The subsequent design phase and cost-benefit analysis was sufficient encouragement to take the next step which was installing a specially designed float cell into the tailings line.
Installed and commissioned at Stratford in October 2007, the cell has increased overall coal yield by about 2%.
The installation also provided additional benefits to the processing plant, including improved clarified water, reduced froth contamination to other process circuits and increased performance of the existing Jameson Cells.
Through innovation, ingenuity and a sound partnership between two companies, Stratford Coal Mine has greatly increased its amount of saleable coal.
