ENTRIES are open for the Coal Mine of the Year category in the 5th Annual Australian Mining Prospect Awards.
The category recognises coal mines that have improved productivity or reached notable milestones using new technology and innovative processes or techniques at a coal operation.
Awaba Colliery, an underground Centennial Coal Company mine south of Newcastle, won the category last year and went on to win the Australian Mine of the Year Award.
Awaba’s management impressed the judges in how they extended the mine’s life by two years, which resulted in an additional two million tonnes of saleable product. Finalists in last year’s Prospect Awards, in addition to Awaba Colliery, included Appin Coal Mine, Beltana Coal Mine, Springvale Coal, Tahmoor Coal Mine and Myuna Coal Mine.
Beltana received the highly commended award at last year’s Prospects for impressing Judges with the use of automation to control production machinery in the mine.
Beltana also impressed the judges with their commitment to occupational health and safety standards.
BMA’s (BHP Mitsubishi Alliance) Blackwater Mine won the 2006 Australian Mining Prospect Award for devising a dynamic brake testing procedure.
