Bushfire threatens FMG’s Cloudbreak mining camp, workers evacuated

Fortescue Metals Group’s Cloudbreak mining camp has been evacuated overnight as a bushfire burns threateningly close to the site.

Workers were evacuated to FMG’s nearby Christmas Creek mine, located about 50 kilometres east of Cloudbreak.

An FMG spokesperson told Australian Mining personnel will be returned to the village “when it is safe to do so”.

“There have been no injuries or significant damage and we are working to contain the fire,” the spokesperson said.

A source close to Australian Mining said water carts were being used in fire fighting efforts.

“They were bringing the big water trucks in as we were leaving,” the source said.

He added that the evacuation ran smoothly and that everyone was safe.

“It came across so quickly,” the source said.
