Downer EDI has been awarded a two-year contract to provide mining and other related services at BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance’s (BMA) Goonyella Riverside coal mine in Moranbah, Queensland.

The contract, valued at approximately $200 million, commenced today, with provisions to be extended for a further three years.

It replaced an existing contract between Downer and Goonyella, which started in 2016 and expired yesterday (September 30).

Goonyella Riverside coal mine, owned by BMA, is in the central Queensland Bowen Basin region and has been producing premium coking coal since 1971.

Downer chief executive officer Grant Fenn said Downer was very pleased to have extended its relationship with the BMA at Goonyella.

“Downer has been working closely with BMA at a number of mine sites for many years,” Fenn said.

“We look forward to continuing to provide safe and productive services at the Goonyella Riverside coal mine.”

Goonyella is one of seven BMA owned and operated mines in the Bowen Basin area and exports more than 55 million tonnes of coal annually to more than 27 countries.

Downer also services the Blackwater mine in the Bowen Basin region, as well as the Commodore mine in the Toowoomba region and Meandu mine in the South Burnett region.
