The Queensland government has launched an advertising campaign spruiking mining jobs and urging Queenslanders to “grab a piece of the resources boom”.
The new advertisements started yesterday and urged Queenslanders to find out more information about employment opportunities in the industry.
The television, print, online, and radio ads will also point interested people to the relevant courses, skills, and training needed get a mining job.
QLD Premier Anna Bligh said in a statement the Government expected as many as 38,000 construction and operation jobs to be created in the resource industry between now and 2015.
She said the Government also estimated there were up to 3,500 current vacancies in the industry.
“I want every Queenslander to have the chance to gain from this boom and that is what these ads are designed to help them do,” she said.
Bligh said the advertisements would direct people to the Government’s opportunities website where they could register for the Resources 101 course, get information on upcoming work expos, and search for jobs.
But in what might come as mixed messages, Xstrata this week said it has been unable to find suitable candidates for six apprenticeships at its Mangoola coalmine.
Following the comments Muswellbrook Mayor Martin Rush labelled Xstrata’s commitment to apprenticeships as “pitiful”.
Dr Alan Montague from RMIT University told Australian Mining that while there was indeed a skills shortage many people were still finding it difficult to get work in the industry.
“I think some people are finding it difficult, I don’t doubt that,” he said.
He said the best way to address job shortages was for the Government to focus on improving education and strengthening industry pathways through University and VET systems.
