The president of Ravensthorpe Shire has said that BHP Billiton’s decision not to pay compensation to business owners and subcontractors it attracted to the town is a crippling blow.
“This is going to be absolutely catastrophic for our community, there are going to be people we know that have lived in this community for a quarter of a century that will go bankrupt,” Shire president Brenda Tillbrook said.
BHP had previously agreed to consider assisting local communities after agreeing to buy back the homes of former employees.
