BHP Billiton has signed a native title deal in the Pilbara that will deliver millions to traditional owners and clear the way for future expansions.
The agreement has been signed between the company and the Nyiyaparli people, and was led by the Yamatji Marlpa Malbra Aboriginal Corporation over the past four years.
While the exact details of the deal remain confidential, it's believed to be comparable to the deal Rio Tinto signed with traditional owners in the Pilbara last year.
Under Rio's agreement traditional owners in the Pilbara will receive more than $2 billion over 40 years.
In announcing its settlement BHP said it had made extensive efforts to protect Indigenous heritage.
