BHP granted extension for Samarco clean up

BHP and Vale have had a request approved by the Federal Prosecutors’ Office in Brazil to receive an additional 150 days — ending April 20 2018 — to continue negotiations surrounding the public settlement of the Bento Rodrigues dam disaster under the Samarco joint venture.

Amendment agreements are subject to approval by the 12th federal court in Brazil, and surrounds the settlement of two claims: one for $US48 billion and another for $US6 billion in reparation payments that were originally supposed to be settled by November 16.

The Samarco tailings dam break occurred on November 2015 at Bento Rodrigues in Mariana and is considered Brazil’s biggest environmental disaster.

The amendment allows state prosecutors to get involved with preliminary agreements, while federal prosecutors can agree to seek advice from socioeconomic experts.
