BHP donates $1million to QLD flood appeal

BHP Billiton has donated a million dollars to the Red Cross' Queensland Floods appeal.

The miner explained that the money will come from BHP's 'Sustainable Communities' fund, and matches the Queensland Government $1 million contribution.

BHP CEO Marius Kloppers stated: “BHP Billiton has a long and proud history in Queensland and we are committed to supporting communities where we operate. We hope these funds will make a positive contribution to the state’s recovery program."

Hubie van Dalsen, BHP's head of metallurgical coal, added that "the donation will help to assist the people of Queensland, our employees and the affected communities in Central Queensland and Brisbane".

BHP employs more than 13 000 workers in the region, predominantly through its BMA coal ventures and its multi-commodity mine at Cannington.
