BGC Contracting revives golden days with Northern Star contract

BGC Contracting has won its first Western Australian gold contract in 10 years as part of Northern Star Resources’ development of the Ramone project.

Ramone is the latest project to be developed at Northern Star’s Jundee operations near Wiluna.

BGC Contracting, which will start work on the $30 million contract this month, will deliver both the initial infrastructure and mining services for the greenfield site over an 18-month period.

The services provided by the contractor will include installation of site facilities, drill and blast, load and haul mining, and dewatering services.

BGC Contracting will also provide additional site works, such as the construction of internal haul roads, the development of a site workshop, explosive compound and magazines, associated earthworks and site preparations.

The Perth-based contractor is mobilising its mining fleet, including a 250-tonne class excavator and five Komatsu 785 dump trucks, at the site.

BGC Contracting chief executive officer Greg Heylen said the Northern Star contract would put the company in good stead for further gold mining opportunities.

“Working closely with the client was pivotal in securing this work,” Heylen said. “We are very excited to secure this project opportunity with BGC Contracting growing its projects, both in commodity and geographical diversification.”

Two years ago, BGC Contracting embarked on a strategy to grow the business, its national footprint and increase its commodity diversification, Heylen added.

“The Ramone contract is a major achievement for our diversification strategy and allows us to extend our expertise in gold whilst providing new job opportunities for some 50-60 people on this greenfield project,” Heylen said.

BGC Contracting’s most recent contract announcement in the resources industry was construction work at Albemarle Corp’s Kemerton lithium plant in Western Australia.

The company also holds major mining contracts across Australia, including agreements at the Whyalla iron ore operations in South Australia and the Boggabri coal mine in New South Wales.
