Asciano win BHP coal contract

Asciano has entered into a long term agreement with BHP Mitsui Coal to haul coal from 2013.

The contract will see Asciano move up to 4.2 million tonnes of coal annually via the northern missing link, which will connect the Newlands and Goonyella mines and is scheduled for completion in early 2012.

John Mullen, Asciano’s managing director, said “winning this contact with such a major coal producer is a coup for our growth into the expansion of Abbot Point.

“A key objective (for Asciano) is to maximise the opportunity for tonnage through the newly expanded port,” he said.

The two diesel powered trains used for haulage will be maintained at the rail firm’s recently announced Nebo heavy maintenance facility.
