Another miner dies at Indonesian Freeport mine

Another worker has died and one is critically injured after an accident at the Freeport McMoran Grasberg mine in Indonesia.

The two Indonesian workers were heading to a loading area when they were caught in a wet sludge rockfall early Sunday morning local time, according to Fresno Bee.

Rescuers managed to pull the two men from collapsed rock pile, however one had already died on site.

They rushed the other man to the nearby Tembagapura hospital in a critical condition.

It is believed that the deceased man is Fikrizal Utama, who was part of general service team crew 4 at the mine.

Freeport McMoran confirmed the accident occurred, telling Reuters the “Freeport Indonesia command center received a report of an incident in the West 1E loading area in the DOZ underground mine”.

“The underground rescue team was immediately deployed … and successfully evacuated two victims.”

The miner stated on its Facebook that investigations having begun.

This is not the first deadly accident at the mine.

Earlier this year operations were haltedfor nearly two months after a tunnel collapse killed 28 miners.
