ABB has won orders worth approximately $100 million for 17 substations to support Rio Tinto’s iron ore expansion in the Pilbara.
According to ABB, these upgrades and the installation of new power infrastructure will raise the voltage level of the existing substations.
"These solutions will also help reinforce the reliability of the grid and ensure the supply of high quality power," ABB’s Australian manager Axel Kuhr explained.
The scope of the contract includes electrical switch rooms, switchgear, cables, power transformers, and ring main units.
ABB will also provide SCADE, and the protection and communication equipment compliant with IEC 61850.
It says that this will enable the remote monitoring and control of power assets at multiple sites from Rio’s Mine of the Future operations centre in Perth.
The projects are scheduled for completion by next year.
