A quick escape for miners

A NEW escape tower will allow miners at the Carborough Downs Coal mine in Mackay a quick exit in the event of an explosion.

A NEW escape tower will allow miners at the Carborough Downs Coal mine in Mackay a quick exit in the event of an explosion.

Macs Engineering designed the tower in response to a request from the coal mine.

According to the company, the tower will stand 76 metres tall and can be transported and assembled in a wide range of locations.

The tower cost $1.5m to design and manufacture, and comprises of two stages.

The first includes six modules rising vertically and a horizontal bridge section which connects to a bench half way up the pit wall.

The second stage includes seven vertical modules and a bridge section which is the safe zone at the top of the pit wall.
