Industrial Conveying Australia is now supplying specialised niche materials handling fitouts, controls systems and ongoing maintenance to the small and medium sized mining sector.

Industrial Conveying’s managing director Don Erskine said mine managers are looking to maximise returns from their processes as a way of safeguarding profits, so materials handing systems must be highly productive.

“For this to happen, the ideal approach is to have a high degree of design customisation because that gives greater applicability to the specific mine operation,” Erskine said.

“We saw that much of the materials handling technology in Australian mining has been sourced from overseas yet the small to medium size mines are better served by using a local supplier who can work closely – and in person – with mine management during a project.

“That way we can maintain ongoing consultation with the client to plan, design, install and maintain exactly to their requirements — and we can do that instantly with a vast array of technologies.”

Industrial Conveying has a team of design engineers capable of customising a fitout — complete with high level control systems — utlising many technologies including conveyors, hoppers, crushers, steelwork and platforms, heavy duty belts, radial stackers, feeders and overland bulk conveyors.

In Victoria and New South Wales there are quite a few gold mines wanting to start up but are struggling to find suppliers to build them.

“As overseas based suppliers had predominantly been the option until we stepped into the market, there was always potential for lead times to be blighted by transport delays, communications difficulties and general misalignment between personnel dealing from different parts of the world.”

Look local

Erskine is one of a growing list of Australian business people urging small and medium-sized Australian mines to look locally during capital investments.

When he saw hardly any material handling suppliers were positioned to supply and fit out mines with materials handling equipment, he duly expanded the operations of Industrial Conveying to fit the emerging need.

“There was little option around so now the ideal job for us is in the $50K to $4m project bracket with turnaround anything from 8-16 weeks.

“When potential clients contact us for a complete mining fit out they are quite relieved that someone local can actually do it.

“Our problem was that too many companies have been aware of us as a conveyor and general material handling specialist, so we set about acquiring the personnel and capabilities to handle mining needs from start to finish.

“One of the main needs we identified was a complete in house design facility that is infinitely more suitable than involvement by a third party consulting engineering group.

“Our in-house design facility is completely staffed by top quality engineers with exceptional CAD skills and work person-to-person with our client.

“It has been a significant expansion and very beneficial to the small to medium-size mining sector which now gets a complete turnkey job at the shortest delivery time possible.”
