$278 000 donated to Pike River Relief

A New Zealand news channel has raised $278 000 in donations for the Pike River Disaster Relief Fund.

During 3news’ broadcast of the tragedy, it set up a simple fund raising scheme where viewers could donate $3 at a time via text message.

The station said they expected to get around 10 000 texts, resulting in $30 000 for the families of victims.

In a story in yesterday’s bulletin, presenter John Campbell said they were “way wrong” with their estimations and the cheque to be presented by the station was from the generous New Zealand people.

“And we know you send it with love,” Campbell said.

Previously, Grey District Mayor Tony Kokshoorn said the distribution of donations to victims families was “complex”.
