Yancoal’s Moolarben coal mine gets approvals

Yancoal has received approvals for the expansion of its operations at the Moolarben coal mine.

The Planning Assessment Commission has approved Stage 1 Modification 9, which will see the extraction of an additional 30 million tonnes run of mine coal over the life of the mine, or approximately 17 million tonnes overall per annum until 2037.

The expansion includes two underground mines, a third open cut mine, an extension to current open pit mines as well as supporting infrastructure.

According to the mine’s manager John Blanning, job numbers will increase from around 300 to over 440 with the expansion expected to provide economic benefits to the local community.

“At peak production the project will contribute $47 million per annum in royalties to the NSW government and provide over $700 million in wider economic benefits to the local region,” Blanning said.

Part of the approvals’ conditions include $1.5 million in community enhancement works, upgrades to Ulan Road and comprehensive water monitoring to ensure zero discharge from the site.

The mine is located near Glencore’s Ulan coal mine and Peabody’s Wilpinjong coal mine.
