NT mining minster ousts head in leadership challenge

NT chief minister Adam Giles has been dumped as territory head following mining minster Willem Westra van Holthe’s challenge.

The leadership challenge last night saw Westra van Holthe replace the standing chief minister Giles after winning nine votes to five, according to the NT News.

Following Giles ousting Westra van Holthe held a press conference stating he “will be running in a fashion that is far more consultative with the people of the Northern Territory”.

Westra van Holthe is the third head of the Northern Territory in close to three years.

He has previously outlined support for the burgeoning region’s petroleum and minerals exploration and production industry, with the NT government working to position itself as a new hotspot for mining.

Last week mining in the Territory took a leap forward with ABM Resources’ Old Pirate project hiring contractors to begin clearing the site for mining.
