Former BP head Tony Hayward appointed head of GlencoreXstrata

Tony Hayward, the former CEO of energy company BP, has been appointed as the new chairman of GlencoreXstrata.

Hayward is best known as the head of BP during the massive Deepwater Horizon oil spill, and the company’s continuing mishaps in rectifying the issue.

He has been a member of Glencore’s board since April 2011, , and served from the company’s IPO as the senior independent director up until May last year, when he was named interim chairman.

The announcement will not affect the role of current CEO Ivan Glasberg, who will continue to act in his position.
