Explosive truck catches fire

An ammonium nitrate truck has caught fire, shutting down a major highway.

The Leichhardt Highway, north of Banana, was closed for the better part of yesterday after a truck carrying 67,000 litres of the explosives mixture ammonium nitrate caught fire.

Fire and rescue services attended the scene, and extinguished the blaze, which had engulfed the tyres.

After the fire cooled emergency services removed the ammonium nitrate.

The drive escaped unhurt.

Late last year a bridge, two fire trucks, and sections of the road were destroyed in a similar incident when a truck carrying ammonium nitrate caught fire and exploded.
