Newmont has made a number of key leadership appointments in a move to shape its ‘go-forward’ ambitions – with expertise taken from the likes of Rio Tinto and BHP.
The appointments include Brian Talbot as the company’s new chief financial officer, Mark Rodgers as chief operating officer, and David Thornton as chief technical officer.
David Fry has also been promoted to the role of executive vice president of project development, a move said to outline the “importance of disciplined project development” as Newmont advances its highest-return growth opportunities.
“These appointments bring together respected leaders with deep industry experience and a strong understanding of our operational, financial, technical and project development disciplines,” Newmont chief executive officer Natascha Viljoen said in a statement.
Talbot brings more than 20 years of experience in finance and accounting leadership, having previously served as chief accounting officer and group head of finance at Newmont.
Rodgers, currently managing director for Africa and Asia Pacific, has worked at Newmont for over six years and has previously served in senior positions at both Rio Tinto and BHP in a career spanning three decades.
Thornton, leading technical services across exploration, processing and mine planning has held several senior operational roles in his 10-year tenure at Newmont, following earlier leadership positions at Gold Fields and Barrick Gold.
Fry draws on extensive experience delivering major infrastructure developments across mining and energy, joining from Rio Tinto where he was managing director for projects across Asia Pacific.
“They [leadership appointments] reflect the strength of leadership and depth of talent we have built at Newmont and the capabilities we need to strengthen performance across the business, advance our world-class portfolio with discipline and pace, and continue creating long-term value for shareholders and stakeholders,” Viljoen said.
