Newmont completes $20m support fund

Newmont has announced the completion of its $20 million Global Community Support Fund, which was established in 2020 to in response to COVID-19.

The objective of the fund was to provide critical financial resources to Newmont’s host communities with the aim of addressing the immediate impacts of the global pandemic.

Newmont sought to bolster long-term resiliency and future community development for the communities situated near its mining operations.

“After almost four years since its launch, we are pleased to announce the successful closure of the Global Community Support Fund, which reflects our ongoing commitment to partnering with the communities where we operate,” Newmont chief safety and sustainability officer Suzy Retallack said.

“The fund’s impact has been far-reaching, contributing to the collective efforts of communities to overcome the challenges posed by the pandemic and innovate for greater resilience in the future.”

Since 2020, Newmont has partnered with more than 420 local governments, medical institutions, charities, and non-governmental organisations to strategically allocate funds.

Once such allocation included $US968,000 donated to Suriname’s Ministry of Health to launch the Recovery and Resilience Project in South America.

Newmont worked in partnership with not-for-profit development company Crown Agents to strengthen Suriname’s health system.

“As part of our commitment to addressing the challenges posed by non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and the impact of COVID-19 in Suriname, Crown Agents, the Ministry of Health and Newmont formed an impactful partnership on the Recovery and Resilience Project,” Crown Agents chief programs officer Sarah Hepworth said.

“Together, we worked to strengthen Suriname’s health system, alleviate the burden of NCDs and COVID-19, and enhance emergency response capabilities.”

Newmont emphasised its commitment to continuing to service its host communities.

“Newmont remains committed to its core values of safety, sustainability, and responsibility, and the successful implementation of the Global Community Support Fund underpins the company’s purpose to create value and improve lives through sustainable and responsible mining,” the company said.
