New website launched to combat proposed iron ore tax

The Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) together with the Chamber of Minerals & Energy have launched an Iron Ore Facts website in response to Brendon Grylls’ proposed tax.

Grylls seeks to impose a $5 per tonne tax, receiving backlash from several parties including BHP, the MCA, and minister for agriculture and water resources Barnaby Joyce  for potentially deterring investment and affecting jobs.

The website outlines the facts of the iron ore industry, particularly the contributions made by Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton. It indicates the amount of royalties paid, the jobs that are created in the industry, and the investments made to benefit WA businesses, suppliers, and communities.

It also has a portal for the public to email their local members in opposition to the tax.

If the tax is approved, the MCA says it would make WA the highest taxing iron ore state in the world.
