New standards for gas emissions

WITH the release of a new international standard for greenhouse gas accounting and verification, Joint Accredited System of Australia and New Zealand (JAS-ANZ) has announced that it is investigating the introduction of an accreditation program that supports greenhouse gas emission trading schemes in Australia and New Zealand.

“Ensuring the credibility of claims for greenhouse gas emissions has emerged as a major issue. Currently there are a number of approaches to accounting for emissions and removals,” JAS-ANZ CEO Tony Craven said.

“ISO’s greenhouse gas verification and validation standards offer a number of advantages. They have been developed for international use, and there are benefits if a consistent approach is taken internationally.”

“The standards were developed by leading international experts in this area. And finally the standards are comprehensive in that they specify requirements not only for the program, but just as importantly, for those who verify the programs.”

“The release of this new standard from ISO, the world’s leading developer of international standards, enables JAS-ANZ to begin planning for the introduction of a program for verification and validation of greenhouse gas claims.”
